Comicon events, celebrated globally for their vibrant cosplay and fanfare, offer a range of fascinating little-known facts.
One such intriguing detail is the origin of the term "cosplay." It was coined by Nobuyuki Takahashi of Studio Hard while attending the 1984 World Science Fiction Convention (WorldCon) in Los Angeles. He was so impressed by the costumed fans that he needed a concise term to describe the experience when reporting back to Japan. He combined the English words "costume" and "play" to create "cosplay," which has since become a global phenomenon integral to Comicon culture.
This term not only defines a hobby but has also evolved into a significant aspect of fan interaction at comic conventions worldwide.
Tarpon and Shark Populations Surge in Tampa Bay, Raising Concerns for Anglers

Tampa Bay is experiencing a surge in tarpon populations, drawing anglers from around the world. Known as the "silver kings," these powerful fish are prized for their size and spectacular aerial displays. However, the increase in tarpon has also led to a rise in shark activity, with sharks frequently attacking hooked tarpon, a phenomenon known as depredation.
This growing issue has caught the attention of Congress, which passed a bill to study the impact of sharks on the tarpon fishery. Conservationists stress the importance of proper catch-and-release practices to protect tarpon, as they are slow-growing and vulnerable. Anglers are advised to open the spool or cut the line if sharks are present.

Retired Air Force Vet Champions Veteran Support in Hillsborough County

Retired Air Force veteran Jim Salgado, inspired by his father’s World War II service, reflects on his own military journey and ongoing community involvement. Starting his career in Pisa, Italy, Salgado later worked on mobile power systems at Robins Air Force Base in Georgia. His service brought him to MacDill Air Force Base, where he faced personal loss with the passing of his father.
After a brief break, 9/11 led to his deployment to the Philippines under Operation Enduring Freedom. Salgado’s career continued at MacDill with the Joint Communication Support Element until his retirement in 2018.
Now a defense contractor, Salgado is also active in veterans' initiatives, including Canines for Christ and the Veterans Treatment Court in Hillsborough County. He shares military coins with veterans in the program as a symbol of strength and resilience.
After 2,300 Flyers and 500 Doors, Escaped Owl Charlie is Home Safe

A Great Horned Owl that escaped during Tropical Storm Debby in Brandon has been safely recovered, the Raptor Center of Tampa Bay announced.
The owl, named Charlie, slipped out of his enclosure on August 5 as the storm swept through the Tampa Bay area. After nearly two weeks of tireless search efforts, which included distributing 2,300 flyers and knocking on 500 doors, Charlie was finally found on Monday.
The Raptor Center shared that Charlie, a four-year-old owl, was spotted in a resident’s backyard around 8:30 a.m. A call to the center led to his safe recovery later that day. Although Charlie is thinner from the ordeal, he is back home and on the mend.
This happy ending concludes a dedicated community effort to bring Charlie back to safety.
