GOOD MORNING

Today’s issue is mostly about water safety. I found some interesting info on rip currents I didn’t know, even having lived in Florida since 1986. First encounter was on northern end of Anna Maria Island.

Tampa Named Third Rudest City in America for 2024

Tampa has been ranked as the third rudest city in the United States for 2024, according to a study by Preply.com. The survey included residents from over a dozen cities, asking about rude behaviors such as being loud in public, ignoring strangers, and mistreating service workers.

Tampa earned a rudeness score of 8.88, making it the third rudest city after Miami (9.88) and Philadelphia (9.12). This marks a significant rise for Tampa, as it wasn’t even in the top 12 in the previous 2022 rankings.

The study also highlighted that older residents are more likely to perceive newcomers as ruder than long-time locals. In contrast, cities like San Diego, Omaha, and Minneapolis were identified as among the least rude.

Neighborhood Heroes Rescue 18-Month-Old from Drowning in Wesley Chapel

A Wesley Chapel community recently united to save the life of an 18-month-old girl who nearly drowned in her family's pool. The incident occurred when little Zoey Zanvardine slipped through an unlatched gate and fell into the water. Her mother, Tamara Zanvardine, quickly called 911 and began CPR, while her husband ran outside, shouting for help.

Neighbors, including an ER nurse and an Army veteran, rushed to the scene and assisted with CPR, helping to revive Zoey. Thanks to their quick actions, Zoey was stabilized and airlifted to the hospital, where she made a full recovery.

The Zanvardine family is now urging others to prioritize pool safety and CPR training, emphasizing that these precautions can save lives. The community’s swift response has turned what could have been a tragedy into a story of survival and gratitude.

Play It Safe: How to Protect Yourself from Rip Currents and Dangerous Waves

The National Weather Service (NWS) urges beachgoers to prioritize safety during summer, especially along Gulf Coast beaches. Rip currents and waves are major hazards, particularly during the above-normal 2024 Atlantic hurricane season. To stay safe, visit lifeguard-protected beaches, where flags indicate daily water hazards. Always keep children within sight and reach.

Understanding the dangers of rip currents can be life-saving. If someone is caught in a rip current, seek help from a lifeguard or call 9-1-1. Encourage the person to swim parallel to the shore, and only attempt a rescue if you have a flotation device. Waves can also be dangerous, so stay vigilant.

The NWS provides valuable safety resources, including online videos and in-person information at many beach locations.

Rip currents are powerful, narrow channels of fast-moving water that are notorious for their strength and unpredictability, making them a major hazard for swimmers in coastal areas.

An astonishing and lesser-known fact about rip currents is that they can actually move at speeds of up to eight feet per second, which is faster than an Olympic swimmer can swim. This incredible speed makes it nearly impossible for even the strongest swimmers to swim directly against a rip current and escape by powering through it.

Furthermore, rip currents do not pull swimmers under the water; they carry swimmers out to sea. This common misconception often leads to panic, which is a major contributing factor to the dangers associated with rip currents. The best way to escape a rip current is by swimming parallel to the shore, not towards it, until one is out of the current’s grip, then angling back to the beach.

New-Look Lightning Gear Up for 2024-25 Season Amid Major Roster Changes

The Tampa Bay Lightning begin the 2024-2025 NHL season without longtime captain Steven Stamkos, who has joined the Nashville Predators.

This marks a new era for the team, which has made key offseason moves to stay competitive. Jake Guentzel, acquired from the Pittsburgh Penguins, is expected to boost the Lightning’s offense, particularly in 5-on-5 situations. Defensively, the return of Ryan McDonagh and the extension of Victor Hedman bring stability, though the departure of Mikhail Sergachev leaves a gap.

Goaltending remains a concern after Andrei Vasilevskiy's inconsistent performance following back surgery. With Jonas Johansson likely as the backup, questions linger about the team’s depth in net.

Despite the challenges, the Lightning still have the potential for a playoff push.
