Tampa Bay Area Gathers for 9/11 Memorials and Remembrance Events

Throughout the Tampa Bay area, several events are being held to honor the victims of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, now 23 years past.

In Tampa, the police and fire departments are hosting a joint memorial at the Tampa Firefighters Museum, where attendees will witness the traditional ringing of the bell and the display of a beam salvaged from the Twin Towers. The ceremony, led by JoAnne Rice, the director of Florida’s Fire Marshal’s Office, is open to the public on Sept. 11 at 9 a.m.

Hillsborough County will also hold a Patriot Day remembrance at Veterans Memorial Park. This free event, starting at 10:30 a.m., is organized by Hillsborough County Fire Rescue and other local organizations, aiming to bring the community together in memory of those lost.

The New Tampa Performing Arts Center (NTPAC) launches its second annual Fall Festival this Thursday, extending to four days after last year's overwhelming success, which drew over 2,200 attendees.

General Manager Keith Arsenault has curated a diverse lineup featuring theater, ballet, opera, and international dance groups like Rudram Dance Company, Kuumba Dancers and Drummers, and Anna Dance Company, highlighting the area's cultural diversity.

Saturday offers family-friendly activities, including a free screening of Disney's live-action Aladdin and the return of the Florida Orchestra's "instrument petting zoo," where children can try out musical instruments. Recycled Tunes, a nonprofit supporting music access for underserved children, will also participate.

Local high schools Freedom and Wharton will showcase performances from their music and theater programs. The festival provides an opportunity for residents to experience the arts and support local talent. The free event runs from Thursday to Sunday at NTPAC, 8550 Hunters Village Road.

70 Years of the Sunshine Skyway: A Bridge to Tampa Bay's Past and Future

Seventy years ago, the Sunshine Skyway Bridge transformed travel across Tampa Bay, officially opening on Labor Day, September 6, 1954. The bridge replaced the need for lengthy detours through Tampa or ferry rides, offering a faster route to southern Florida.

Plans for such a bridge date back to the 1920s, with figures like Herman Simmonds advocating for a suspension bridge. After numerous delays, funding was finally secured in 1949, and construction began shortly after.

The bridge’s name, "Sunshine Skyway," was chosen through a national contest. The opening day saw celebratory parades and marked the end of the Bee Line Ferry service. Over the years, the Skyway evolved, with a second span added in 1971 and a new bridge constructed after the tragic 1980 collapse. Today, the Sunshine Skyway stands as an iconic symbol of Tampa Bay’s history and progress.

Bucs Show Offensive Firepower in Season-Opening Victory

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers opened the season with a dominant 37-20 win over the Washington Commanders.

Baker Mayfield led the offense, completing 24 of 30 passes for 289 yards and four touchdowns, with the team scoring on seven of eight possessions. First-year offensive coordinator Liam Coen earned praise for his play-calling, and the Bucs' improved ground game racked up 112 yards. Receiver Chris Godwin had eight catches for 83 yards and a touchdown, highlighting the offense's potential.

Despite the win, head coach Todd Bowles stressed there’s still work to be done, especially after settling for three field goals. Defensively, injuries to multiple cornerbacks are a concern, with Christian Izien stepping in as an emergency cornerback. Rookie running back Bucky Irving stood out, leading the rushing attack.

Next up: the Detroit Lions, who defeated the Bucs twice last season.
