New Tampa’s K-Bar Ranch Park Moves Forward with $1M Design

New Tampa residents can look forward to new recreational opportunities as $1 million has been approved for the design of K-Bar Ranch Park. A key feature will be the area’s first cricket field, designed to serve the large Indian-American community.

The 65-acre park will also include playgrounds, trails, and multi-purpose fields. Tampa City Council member Luis Viera, who championed the project, celebrated this win for New Tampa families.

K-Bar Ranch Park will join two other nearby projects—Cross Creek Park and Branchton Regional Park—giving New Tampa residents more local outdoor options. The park's design is expected to be completed by year-end, with community input sessions set to shape the final features.

North Tampa Divided Over I-275 Widening Project

The push to widen I-275 from Hillsborough Avenue to Bearss Avenue has reignited tensions in North Tampa. Transit advocates and residents are voicing opposition to the $260 million project, arguing it diverts funds from much-needed public transit improvements.

Despite objections, Hillsborough County Commissioner Joshua Wostal revived the widening plan in an 8-7 vote, citing congestion reduction and emergency evacuation benefits.

The debate continues as transit activists push for alternatives.

Busch Gardens Needs Your Help to Name Its Baby Rhino

Busch Gardens Tampa Bay is celebrating the arrival of a baby southern white rhino, born on September 1. Weighing in at around 100 pounds, this female calf is now thriving alongside her mother, Kisiri, after some bonding time behind the scenes. Guests can catch a glimpse of the pair during the Serengeti Safari Tour.

Now, Busch Gardens is inviting the public to help name the little rhino. The park has provided three name options, including Zahara, which means "flower" in Swahili. Voting is open until September 28, so make sure to cast your vote and help decide her name!

Tired Face Wins as 2024's Most Anticipated New Emoji

see linked article for official new emojis

Later this year, smartphone users can expect eight new emojis, including a much-anticipated face with bags under the eyes, which won nearly 63% of the vote at the World Emoji Awards 2024. Other new additions are a fingerprint, purple splatter, root vegetable, leafless tree, harp, shovel, and a flag representing the island of Sark.

These emojis will join the Unicode Consortium's ever-expanding collection, now totaling 3,790. The unique designs may vary slightly between Android and iPhone keyboards, but all devices will support these new icons.

Fans are especially excited about the tired face emoji, with the splatter and shovel following closely behind in popularity.

One astonishing and lesser-known fact about emojis is that they have been recognized in legal settings as valid forms of signature.

In 2015, an Israeli lawyer named Gil David sued a client for not paying a legal fee. To settle the dispute, David sent a contract via WhatsApp, and instead of a traditional handwritten signature, he used the "thumbs up" emoji 👍 as his signature. The court accepted the emoji as a legitimate signature, affirming that digital symbols like emojis can hold legal weight in contractual agreements. This landmark decision highlights the evolving role of digital communication in formal and legal contexts, underscoring how emojis have transcended their casual origins to become integral parts of modern interaction.
