Carnival Celebrates 30 Years of Cruises from Tampa Bay

Carnival Cruise Line is celebrating 30 years of cruising from Port Tampa Bay. A special VIP ceremony took place aboard the Carnival Paradise, a Fantasy-class ship offering year-round sailings to the Western Caribbean and the Bahamas. Since 1994, over 10 million passengers have departed from Tampa aboard Carnival ships.

In addition to the Carnival Paradise, the larger Carnival Legend will begin sailings from Tampa in October 2024, offering longer voyages to destinations like the Panama Canal.

Florida Scientists Identify New Hammerhead Shark, Thanks to DNA Clues

Florida scientists have discovered a new hammerhead shark species, Sphyrna alleni, named after philanthropist and Microsoft co-founder Paul G. Allen. Initially mistaken for the bonnethead shark, this new species was identified through DNA analysis and physical examination.

The shark's range extends from Belize to Brazil. Local fishers in Belize played a crucial role in the research, tagging and monitoring sharks.

Polk County's Haunted Jail Tour Returns for One Final Scare

The Polk County Sheriff’s Office has announced the return of its annual Haunted Jail Tour, taking place at the Lawrence W. Crow, Jr. building in Bartow. Set for October 18, 19, 25, and 26, the event promises four nights of spooky fun, from 6:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m.

This year marks the tour's final run, making it a must-see for Halloween enthusiasts. Admission is a $15 donation for adults and $5 for children under 10, with all proceeds benefiting the United Way of Central Florida.

For parents looking to attend without their little ones, PCSO will provide supervision, along with fun activities like a bounce house and a "dunk your deputy" dunk tank. Food trucks will also be on-site, offering refreshments.

Tickets are available for purchase in person, with both cash and credit card options accepted.

One astonishing but lesser-known fact about Halloween haunted houses is that many of them incorporate advanced psychological techniques and behavioral science principles to intensify the fear experience. Beyond the typical visual scares and eerie sounds, designers meticulously manipulate elements such as lighting, scents, and even the flow of foot traffic to influence visitors' emotions and physiological responses.

These meticulously crafted environments leverage our natural psychological responses to create deeply immersive and terrifying experiences, transforming haunted houses from simple attractions into expertly designed psychological thrillers.

Bicyclist Killed by Red-Light Runner Near Shops at Wiregrass

A tragic accident occurred late Sunday in Wesley Chapel when a bicyclist was struck and killed by a vehicle at the intersection of State Road 56 and Shops Lane. According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the collision happened just after 11 p.m. as a 50-year-old woman was riding her bike through a marked crosswalk. A 19-year-old man driving a Honda Pilot allegedly ran a red light and hit the bicyclist. Despite being rushed to a nearby hospital, the woman later died from her injuries. The driver was not harmed in the crash.

This tragic accident serves as a sobering reminder of the dangers at busy intersections.
