Hurricane Helene Brings Heavy Flooding to Tampa Bay Area

As Hurricane Helene moves through the Gulf of Mexico, significant flooding is affecting several parts of the Tampa Bay region.
In Manatee County, Bradenton Police reported early Thursday morning flooding at Riverview Boulevard and 21st Street West. Pinellas County has been hit particularly hard, with areas like St. Petersburg experiencing flooding in neighborhoods such as Venetian, Bayou Grande, and Shore Acres Blvd. St. Pete Police warned drivers to avoid waterlogged streets.
Treasure Island and Clearwater also reported substantial flooding, especially in evacuation Zone A, with officials urging residents to seek higher ground.
Further south, Sarasota County is seeing street flooding in Venice, with areas like Esplanade/Tarpon Center Drive and Higel Marine Park being affected.

WUCF Takes Viewers Through Clearwater’s Storied Past on ‘Florida Road Trip’

The latest episode of Florida Road Trip takes viewers to Clearwater, highlighting its iconic landmarks such as the Bilheimer Capitol Theatre, Clearwater Marine Aquarium, and Robert’s Christmas Wonderland.
Executive Producer Heather Bailey expressed newfound appreciation for the city after learning about the theatre's origins, originally an open-air venue near Coachman Park. The episode also features The Collection on Palmetto, which showcases functional engines from the industrial revolution, and Fort Harrison, built in 1841.
Clearwater is the third stop in Florida Road Trip’s 10th season. New episodes air Thursdays at 8 p.m. on WUCF TV. More information at FloridaRoadTrip.org.
One astonishing and lesser-known fact about road trips is that the interstate highway system in the U.S. was designed with emergency runways in mind. The system, officially called the Dwight D. Eisenhower National System of Interstate and Defense Highways, was partly intended to allow for military aircraft to land in the event of an emergency or wartime situation. Certain straight stretches of highway were specifically engineered with the dimensions and structural strength needed to support aircraft landings, although they are rarely used for this purpose today.
Reader’s Comments:
“I just want to say thank you for this email daily. I like to read this like I used to read the newspaper ages ago. I start my day with it”
“The AI artwork in your newsletters is usually really good, but the Carnival Paradise I had to stare at for a good few seconds to realize it wasn’t an actual picture. You even had some industrial machinery on the one side of the channel. You’re crushing it. Oh - the actual newsletter was great, as always. I appreciate what you do. Best, Greg”
Thank You!

"Weekend Warrior" Workouts Cut Risk of 264 Diseases, Study Finds

A recent study from Massachusetts General Hospital has revealed that “weekend warrior” exercise—where individuals concentrate physical activity into one or two days—can lower the risk of developing 264 diseases, comparable to those who exercise more regularly throughout the week. Published in Circulation, the research analyzed data from 89,573 participants in the UK Biobank study, tracking their physical activity via wrist accelerometers.
The study categorized participants as "weekend warriors," "regular exercisers," or "inactive," based on whether they met the recommended 150 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity per week. The results showed both weekend warriors and regular exercisers experienced significantly lower risks for conditions like hypertension, diabetes, and mood disorders compared to inactive individuals.
Lead researchers, Dr. Shaan Khurshid and Dr. Patrick Ellinor, emphasized that total activity volume, not the distribution of workouts, appears most crucial for reducing disease risk. They recommend any exercise pattern that fits an individual's schedule while meeting health guidelines.
