Pasco County Opens Offices to Support Storm Recovery Efforts

Pasco County has ramped up its storm recovery efforts this week. Following the lifting of evacuation orders for flood zones on Monday, the county has opened new comfort stations and is deploying construction and permitting experts to help residents and businesses assess damages and begin repairs.
Officials are warning that the aftermath of a hurricane can be just as dangerous as the storm itself. Flooded homes can harbor hidden risks, such as water-damaged electrical outlets and appliances, leading to hazards like fires. County officials stress that residents should not rush the cleanup process and should seek professional inspections before restoring power.
To assist, residents can visit two locations today: Gulf Harbors Civic Association in New Port Richey and Sea Ranch Civic Association in Hudson. These sites will offer guidance on repairs and recovery.
For more information, call Pasco County’s emergency line at (727) 847-2411.
Family’s Home Burns Minutes After Power Restored in Pasco County

A Hudson family lost their home to a fire Tuesday, minutes after their power was restored. The blaze erupted on Sea Ranch Drive, in one of the areas hit hardest by Hurricane Helene.
Pasco County Fire and Rescue closed the road for hours as they responded to the incident. Across Pasco County, officials are urging homeowners to have their homes inspected by certified electricians before restoring power. Homeowners also have the option to sign a waiver acknowledging the risks of skipping the inspection.
County officials are holding information sessions to guide residents through the process of safe power restoration. Details and lists of certified electricians are available on the county’s website.
Brew Your Own Beer: Land O’ Lakes Shop Offers Fun Classes

Afford-a-Brew in Land O’ Lakes offers beer enthusiasts the chance to learn the art of homebrewing. Owner Derek White opened the store six years ago, offering equipment, ingredients, and one-on-one brewing classes. The hands-on lessons teach participants how to craft their favorite beer styles, from grain to glass, and each participant leaves with a case of their homemade brew.
White, a passionate homebrewer for over a decade, started the business to fill a local gap for homebrewing supplies. He says about one in five customers who take the class become dedicated homebrewers. The classes are kept small, with no more than four participants, ensuring personalized attention.

Bird Flu Devastation Sends Egg Prices Soaring

Egg prices have surged 28.1% over the past year, now averaging $3.20 per dozen, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Experts link the sharp increase to a severe bird flu outbreak, which led to the culling of over 4 million chickens in Iowa earlier this year.
The outbreak also affected poultry workers in Colorado, with four workers contracting mild cases of bird flu.
The bird flu, known as H5N1, has been spreading among animals since 2020, infecting a variety of species worldwide. Though the virus has been detected in U.S. livestock, including cattle, health officials are not yet advising mass vaccination.
