Port Strike Threatens Supply Chain Amid Tampa’s Hurricane Recovery

A nationwide dock workers’ strike has hit Port Tampa Bay, one of four major Florida ports, just as the area recovers from Hurricane Helene. Around three dozen workers joined 45,000 International Longshoremen's Association members demanding wage increases after their contracts expired.
Union representative Nicholas Defresco said workers are fighting for fair wages that reflect rising inflation. "We just want a fair contract," he stated.
Michael Rubin, President of the Florida Ports Council, warned the strike could worsen shortages of crucial goods like construction materials and furniture, essential for rebuilding after the hurricane. Frozen food supplies may also be disrupted due to the short shelf life.
"If you need to replace storm-damaged furniture, expect delays," Rubin added.
Ports in Jacksonville, Fort Lauderdale, and Miami are also affected.
Hurricane Helene Aftermath: How to Spot Contractor Scams

In the wake of Hurricane Helene, homeowners should be cautious of potential contractor scams.
The Florida Attorney General’s Office warns that scammers may pose as legitimate contractors, offering services door-to-door. Be wary of anyone who promises discounts, claims to have leftover materials, insists on cash-only deals, or pressures you to make an immediate decision.
To protect yourself, verify contractor licenses through the Florida Department of Business Regulation, and always ask for proof of insurance. Get at least three written estimates and carefully review all contracts.
If you suspect fraud, report it to local authorities and the Florida Attorney General’s Office at 1-866-966-7226.

Chris McDarby, a 38-year-old from Hillsborough County, has been honored as Special Olympics Florida’s Athlete of the Year. McDarby received the award at the organization’s Champions Gala for his long-time dedication and athletic accomplishments.
Since joining in 1995, McDarby has competed in sports including track and field, bowling, golf, and tennis.
"Chris is a spectacular ambassador," said Special Olympics Florida President Sherry Wheelock. "He inspires those around him with courage and determination."
McDarby’s achievements extend beyond this recognition. He won the Zenay Morales Courage Award in 2010, excelled in golf at the 2014 Special Olympics USA Games, and was recently named the Todd Falanga Inspirational Athlete of the Year.
Outside of sports, McDarby is an accomplished artist with works featured at the Gasparilla Art Festival and Tampa International Airport. He also volunteers locally and serves as a Special Olympics Global Messenger.
McDarby said, “Special Olympics Florida athletes have many talents and make the world a better place.”

Spooky Tales & River Fun: Tampa’s Haunted River Tour Thrills All Ages

(Boat config. may not be accurate)
If you're looking for spooky fun this Halloween season, Tampa’s Haunted River Tour is a must! Hosted by Pirate Water Taxis, this frightful yet family-friendly adventure takes place on the historic Hillsborough River. I experienced the tour with my family last night, and it was packed with ghostly tales, thrilling encounters, and scenic views.
The tour, lasting about 50 minutes, offers spooky historical stories of Tampa while navigating the river. Departing from behind the Tampa Convention Center, the boats are decked out with eerie decorations, from cobwebs to ghosts. The highlight for kids is Captain Patchy’s Pumpkin Barge, where children receive a pumpkin and fun surprises. Adults can enjoy beverages on board, adding to the festive atmosphere.
Captain Jack II led our tour, blending history with ghostly legends, and entertaining kids along the way. Whether you’re a fan of paranormal tales or simply want a unique Halloween activity, this affordable river tour is a perfect choice for all ages.
