Hillsborough Commissioner Seeks End to Water Fluoridation Over Health Concerns

Hillsborough County Commissioner Joshua Wostal has reignited the debate over adding fluoride to Tampa Bay's drinking water. On Sept. 26, Wostal announced plans to propose halting the practice, citing concerns over children's health. His stance follows a federal judge's order for the EPA to increase fluoride regulations after a report indicated potential risks to children’s intellectual development at levels above 1.5 milligrams per liter.

Hillsborough County currently adjusts its fluoride levels from 0.5 to 0.7 milligrams per liter, considered ideal for preventing tooth decay. Wostal, however, argues that increasing fluoride in water could be risky due to other sources of fluoride exposure, such as tea and toothpaste.

The fluoride debate has a history in Tampa Bay, with Pinellas County briefly stopping the practice in 2011 before reintroducing it following public pressure.

Editor’s Note:

Ms Joyce: Although you may have been eliminated from the competition, congrats on trying and progressing as far as you did. Getting even this far takes guts and confidence, and I wanted to acknowledge your accomplishment personally.

In the past I’ve accompanied (as a musician) the Tampa Bay Children’s Choir (apparently now part of Lumina Youth Choirs) and know the quality of the choir to which you bring credit. Yay!

Could Wesley Chapel Finally Get Its

Cheesecake Factory?

After years of speculation and rumors, The Cheesecake Factory might finally be coming to Wesley Chapel. Preliminary documents filed with Pasco County indicate plans to open the popular restaurant at Tampa Premium Outlets.

These pre-application documents outline a 7,732-square-foot location featuring an 11-seat bar, a 58-seat cocktail lounge, and dining rooms that can accommodate 132 guests, along with a patio seating area for 78.

With its vast menu and famous cheesecake selection, The Cheesecake Factory could be a welcome addition to a community always eager for more dining options.

For now, locals await confirmation of what has long been a topic of local curiosity.

Aldi to Open Third New Tampa Location, Replacing Winn-Dixie

Winn-Dixie is set to close its New Tampa store on County Line Road by December, making way for the area's third Aldi location. This store, located across from Wesley Chapel’s Super Target, will be converted into a smaller-format Aldi store early next year.

The transformation is part of a larger move by Aldi, which purchased 400 Winn-Dixie and Harvey’s Supermarket locations from Southeastern Grocers.

Aldi has built a strong following thanks to its lower prices, simplified shopping experience, and exclusive brands.

One astonishing fact about Aldi that is not commonly known is that Aldi and Trader Joe's are owned by two different branches of the same family. Aldi was founded in Germany by brothers Karl and Theo Albrecht.

In the 1960s, a disagreement led to the company being split into two separate entities: Aldi Nord (run by Theo) and Aldi Süd (run by Karl). Aldi Nord eventually purchased Trader Joe's in 1979, while Aldi Süd operates the Aldi stores in the U.S. Both companies have evolved independently, but they share a common origin!
