Tropical System May Form, But No 'Hurricane Nadine' Yet, Says NHC

Amid false social media claims about an imminent "Hurricane Nadine," meteorologists clarified no hurricane is currently on track to hit the U.S. Online posts suggested a storm could make landfall on October 18, using outdated tracks from Hurricane Helene.
The National Hurricane Center (NHC) has confirmed a system several hundred miles west of the Caribbean could develop into a tropical storm.
As of Monday, the NHC gave this system a 50% chance of developing in the next seven days. The low-pressure area, west of the Cabo Verde Islands, is producing scattered thunderstorms. Forecasters expect it could strengthen as it moves toward the Leeward Islands this weekend.
If it becomes a hurricane, it will be named "Nadine."

Hillsborough Man Arrested for Stealing Generator from Traffic Light

A Hillsborough County man, Soyal Zapata-Dye, was reportedly caught by TECO workers attempting to take a generator at the intersection of Sun City Center Boulevard and Stoneham Drive.
The generator was providing power to a traffic light likely damaged during the storm. TECO workers took photos of Zapata-Dye and his vehicle’s license plate, which they later gave to authorities.
Deputies from the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office arrested Zapata-Dye at his home on Sunday. He now faces charges of grand theft in the third degree, specifically during a state of emergency, which elevates the seriousness of the crime.
An astonishing fact about looting during or after major storms is that in some instances, organized crime groups have been found to use the chaos of natural disasters to coordinate large-scale theft operations.
Rather than random or opportunistic looting, these groups plan their heists in advance, waiting for storms or natural disasters to create a law enforcement vacuum.
In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in 2005, for example, there were reports of coordinated theft rings targeting everything from electronics to firearms. This type of looting goes beyond the spontaneous, survival-driven looting that is often more publicized.
Authorities have since learned to watch for more sophisticated criminal activity during disaster recovery, though it remains less commonly discussed in media coverage compared to looting by individuals.
80-Year-Old Found in Flooded Car Following Hurricane Milton Evacuations

An 80-year-old woman, Moira Bossard, who went missing during Hurricane Milton, was found dead in a submerged car in Pasco County. Bossard had been last seen on October 8, heading to a hurricane shelter in Spring Hill. However, shelter staff reported that she never checked in.
According to Hernando County deputies, Bossard appeared confused before leaving for the shelter, at one point returning home after getting lost. Neighbors mentioned she had plans to drive to Tennessee to be with family, but she never made the trip.
Her vehicle was found submerged in water on Sunday following the storm. Pasco County experienced severe flooding, with mandatory evacuations issued for several zones near the Withlacoochee River due to rising waters.

25 Years of Excellence: USF Women’s Basketball Celebrates Coach Fernandez

The University of South Florida is celebrating head coach Jose Fernandez's 25th season leading the women's basketball team. The festivities will be held on November 14, when USF faces Vanderbilt, exactly 25 years since Fernandez first became head coach. A pregame ceremony and a special giveaway will mark the occasion.
Coach Fernandez has turned USF into a powerhouse, with nine NCAA Tournament appearances and consistent Top-25 rankings. He's one of only six active Division I coaches who have led a team for 25 or more seasons.
Fans can enjoy a special ticket promotion of four tickets for $25 to honor the milestone.
