Two New Systems Monitored, Florida Unlikely to See Impacts
Meteorologists are monitoring two weather systems in the Atlantic and Caribbean, but neither is expected to threaten Florida. The National Hurricane Center (NHC) is tracking a low-pressure area in the central tropical Atlantic. Though currently in dry air, this system could gradually develop later in the week. It has a 60% chance of development over the next seven days as it moves west-northwest, possibly nearing the Leeward Islands, but is unlikely to affect Florida.
The second system is a broad low-pressure area in the southwestern Caribbean, which may develop slowly if it stays over water as it moves toward northern Central America.
Meanwhile, a cold front will bring cooler, drier air across Florida, providing pleasant weather.

Hurricane Milton: 4 Life-Saving Lessons for Tampa Bay

Hurricane Milton left key lessons for Tampa Bay:
Evacuations Save Lives: Tampa residents heeded warnings from officials like Mayor Jane Castor, who stressed the need for evacuation. Over 25,000 sought refuge in emergency shelters, a big improvement from Hurricane Helene, which saw 11 deaths in evacuation Zone A.
Flooding in Unexpected Areas: Milton’s extreme rainfall, a one-in-1,000-year event, flooded typically safe areas like St. Petersburg’s North Kenwood and Clearwater, despite being outside major evacuation zones.
Hurricanes Bring Tornadoes: Milton spawned dozens of tornadoes, with 126 warnings issued statewide. Southeast Florida, far from landfall, suffered major damage from these unexpected tornadoes.
Stronger Rebuilding May Not Always Happen: While some areas plan to rebuild stronger, like a new Rays stadium designed for Category 4 winds, less attention is being paid to other areas, such as regulating construction cranes.

Survival Secrets of Yeast Could Help Defeat Cancer

Researchers at the University of Virginia and Germany’s EMBL have uncovered a survival mechanism in yeast that may provide new insights into cancer treatment. The study shows how yeast cells, used in brewing beer, survive starvation by going dormant, much like cancer cells during nutrient shortages caused by rapid growth.
Led by Ahmad Jomaa, PhD, the team found that yeast cells coat their mitochondria with deactivated ribosomes, a previously unknown process. This helps the cells enter dormancy during stress. Understanding this could lead to strategies that make cancer cells more vulnerable to treatment.
The yeast studied, S. pombe, is biologically similar to human cells. The researchers hope their findings will lead to methods for detecting and targeting dormant cancer cells, improving outcomes and preventing relapses.

Hurricane Milton Keeps Rays Out of Tropicana for 2025 Season Start

The Tampa Bay Rays will be unable to play at Tropicana Field for the start of the 2025 MLB season due to damage from Hurricane Milton. The Category 3 storm left severe damage to Tropicana Field's roof and some team offices. According to Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times, the stadium is still under assessment, but it is clear the Rays won’t be ready for Opening Day on March 27.
While the team’s temporary home remains undecided, several nearby minor league stadiums are being considered. Options include George M. Steinbrenner Field, BayCare Ballpark, TD Ballpark, LECOM Park, and Joker Marchant Stadium. However, the Rays may need a stadium with a roof, which limits their choices.
There is no timeline yet for how long repairs will take.
