High-Flying Fun in Tampa as Red Bull Flugtag Gears Up with Star Judges

Red Bull Flugtag is ready to make a splash in Tampa on November 9, with 32 daring teams launching homemade flying crafts from a 27-foot platform at the Tampa Convention Center.

Judges include Tampa Bay Lightning goalie Andrei Vasilevskiy, NFL Hall of Famer Derrick Brooks, gamer Turner “Tfue” Tenney, surfer Caroline Marks, and YouTube star Twan Kuyper, who will score teams based on creativity, performance, and distance.

Among the participants are “The Spirit of St. Pete,” a nod to Tampa’s aviation history by local media sites That’s So Tampa and I Love the ‘Burg, and “HUNK of Flyin’ Junk” by College Hunks Hauling Junk, an eco-friendly craft built from hurricane debris.

Over 80,000 spectators are expected to watch these unique crafts take flight in this free, outdoor event that promises thrilling entertainment, local business support, and a community celebration.

Fans can also enjoy live music by DJ Dani, streaming on Tfue’s Twitch, and special appearances by Red Bull athlete Parks Bonifay.

USF Opera Workshop Presents Free Evening of Opera Classics and Musical Theater

Join the USF Opera Workshop on November 15 at 7:30 p.m. at Barness Recital Hall for a night of iconic opera scenes, stirring arias, and cherished musical theater pieces. This dynamic ensemble will present a range of captivating stories, from heartfelt reunions to comic wedding mishaps, all brought to life with imaginative staging.

The program includes works by celebrated composers such as Mozart, Puccini, Donizetti, Wagner, and Bizet.

Tickets are free for the 2024-2025 season and will be offered on a first-come, first-served basis. Doors open one hour before the performance; early arrival is recommended.

Legacy of Amir Abdur-Rahim: USF Men’s Basketball Appoints Interim Head Coach

South Florida Athletics has appointed Ben Fletcher as interim head coach for the USF men’s basketball team for the 2024-25 season after the passing of Head Coach Amir Abdur-Rahim, 43. Abdur-Rahim, who led USF to a record 25-8 season, left a lasting impact on the team and community.

During Fletcher’s first practice as interim coach, he noted the team’s dedication as a tribute to Abdur-Rahim’s legacy. Fletcher, promoted to associate head coach in June 2024, previously worked with Abdur-Rahim at Kennesaw State. Remembering their bond, Fletcher shared how Abdur-Rahim encouraged him, saying, “God is preparing you for this.”

USF’s Vice President of Athletics Michael Kelly praised Abdur-Rahim’s influence, highlighting his connection to the community. A public celebration of life for Abdur-Rahim will be held at the Yuengling Center on Saturday, Nov. 2, at 11 a.m.
