Red Bull Flugtag Returns to Tampa:

What to Know Before You Go

Details now available for the big event

Get ready for thrills as Red Bull Flugtag returns to Tampa’s Riverwalk this Saturday, November 9. This free, family-friendly event draws 80,000 spectators eager to watch teams launch homemade flying machines off a 27-foot platform over the Tampa Convention Center Marina.

Expect a lively atmosphere with celebrity judges, including Lightning goalie Andrei Vasilevskiy and NFL Hall of Famer Derrick Brooks, assessing the outrageous contraptions of over 30 teams.

The festivities open at noon, with the competition starting at 1 p.m. Parking nearby can be challenging, so consider Fort Brooke Parking Garage or parking in Ybor and taking the free TECO Line Streetcar.

Essentials to Know:

  • Bring: Blankets, small umbrellas, portable chairs, and sealed water bottles.

  • Leave at Home: Large backpacks, pets, tents, alcohol, glass containers, and drones.

  • Food & Drink: Find Red Bull specials at The Sail bar, plus food from Big Ray’s Fish Camp and other pop-ups.

  • Weather: The event proceeds rain or shine, but delays are possible with thunder and lightning.

Tampa Bay Winter Forecast:

Warmer, Drier Days Ahead

Winter’s official start is a month away, and Florida’s “cool” season is set to be warmer and drier than average, driven by an anticipated La Niña climate pattern. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) projects above-average temperatures for Tampa Bay, marking what could be the state’s 13th consecutive warm winter.

La Niña, part of a global weather cycle, often brings drier air to Florida in winter, raising daytime temperatures. Although forecasters predict this La Niña will be weak, Tampa’s winter still has a 50% chance of above-average warmth and dryness.

Despite recent heavy rains from hurricanes, forecasters do not expect drought conditions. Florida State Climatologist David Zierden notes the warmth trend aligns with climate change, with Florida experiencing uninterrupted warm winters since 2011.

For now, Tampa Bay residents can expect a humid week with highs in the upper 80s, as Tropical Storm Rafael passes offshore, potentially bringing some rain midweek.

Land O’ Lakes Dominates Wesley Chapel in Homecoming Rout

The Land O’ Lakes Gators snapped a season of close losses with a decisive 42-14 win over Wesley Chapel on the Wildcats' Homecoming Night. Running back T.J. Morrow powered through with 136 yards and a touchdown, while sophomore quarterback Chance Houston threw for 222 yards and three touchdowns. Houston’s highlight pass, a 39-yard touchdown to Xavier Clemente, set the tone early.

The Gators excelled across the board, with standout performances on defense and special teams, including Christian Vollstedt’s punt block and a critical onside kick recovery by Dean Mullarkey. Wesley Chapel, limited to 113 yards, managed two late touchdowns, but Land O' Lakes kept control throughout.

The night ended somberly when Wesley Chapel's Jordan Woullard collapsed on the sideline and was taken to the hospital.

An intriguing and lesser-known aspect of vote counting is that in some places, “overvotes” and “undervotes” can significantly impact how votes are interpreted and sometimes even lead to hand recounts. An "overvote" happens when a voter selects more candidates than allowed, such as marking two presidential candidates, which can lead to the vote being invalidated in certain races. An "undervote" occurs when no choice is marked, or the machine doesn’t detect any valid selection in a given race.

Counting these ballots accurately can be tricky, as they require extra scrutiny to determine voter intent, especially in states that conduct hand recounts for close races. This meticulous process not only ensures fairness but also highlights how complex and detail-oriented modern vote counting has become.
