Junior League’s Holiday Gift Market:

Tampa’s Ultimate Shopping Event

This weekend, the Junior League of Tampa hosts its popular Holiday Gift Market at the Florida State Fairgrounds, with over 200 merchants.

Shoppers can explore apparel, jewelry, candles, holiday décor, gourmet food, cookware, artwork, pet apparel, and more—ideal for tackling holiday gift lists early.

A special preview event kicks off on Thursday, Nov. 7, from 7-10 p.m., requiring a $30 ticket for exclusive early access.

The main market opens Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m.-6 p.m. and Sunday from 9 a.m.-4 p.m., with tickets priced at $10-$12. Children aged 5 and under enter for free. The market will be held at the Florida State Fairgrounds, 4800 U.S. 301, Tampa. For more details, visit jltampa.org.

Pasco Students to Extend School Days in 2025 for Storm Makeup

Pasco County schools will convert four early-release days into full school days in 2025 to recover instructional time lost due to Hurricanes Helene and Milton. The designated makeup days are Jan. 29, Feb. 26, March 26, and April 30, allowing families to keep holiday schedules unchanged.

The district canceled two days for Helene and seven for Milton. Originally, officials planned to decide on makeup days after hurricane season, but high parent interest led to an earlier decision.

To avoid similar issues in future years, the district plans to add flexible three-day weekends in spring that could be used if makeup days are needed.

Why we’re fall-ing in love with Wayfair

It's no secret that Wayfair is a fun place to shop, but in a world where every penny counts, we're not just looking to have fun. Our goal is to save big on quality home goods as we gear up for the holidays. In case you're wondering, "Is Wayfair legit?" or "Is Wayfair furniture good quality?", we can confidently answer yes to those questions, and if you read Wayfair reviews, you’ll find that thousands of customers agree with us.

But there are even more reasons to love Wayfair, and Brad's Deals rounded up their top reasons. Brad (yes, it's a real guy) was a broke college student who found cheaper ways to shop and shared them with his friends in the early 2000’s. Now their experts search the web to find the best deals, and share them with users. To join the club, all you need is an email address.

A Taste of Heritage: Sherry Pocknett Preserves Mashpee Wampanoag Cuisine

EDITOR’S NOTE: This article is not locally based but it’s a very interesting story. Be sure to see photos in link below - the dish is simply mouth-watering!

At Sly Fox Den Too in Charlestown, Rhode Island, chef Sherry Pocknett preserves the culinary heritage of her Mashpee Wampanoag roots. As the first Indigenous woman to win a James Beard Award in 2023, Pocknett’s dishes highlight traditional ingredients and cooking methods inspired by her coastal upbringing in Massachusetts and Rhode Island.

Her menu reflects her family's food practices, featuring seafood like lobster and eel alongside wild-gathered ingredients. She learned foraging from her mother, gathering berries and beach plums each summer—a memory that now shapes her cooking.

Signature dishes like lobster chowder, infused with fennel and garlic, and fry bread, fried in sunflower oil, embody her heritage’s flavors. For Pocknett, each meal is a tribute to the Mashpee Wampanoag’s enduring food traditions, offering diners a taste of Indigenous history and resilience.

One little-known fact about the James Beard Awards is that the criteria for winning extend beyond culinary skills and creativity; the award often reflects broader social and cultural contributions in the food world.

In recent years, there’s been a push for inclusivity, with an emphasis on highlighting chefs and restaurants that promote sustainable practices, social justice, and cultural representation. This has led to a more diverse group of nominees and winners, moving away from solely recognizing classic or fine dining chefs to include those uplifting regional and indigenous cuisines, advocating for equitable labor practices, and prioritizing environmental impact.

Additionally, the James Beard Foundation has a strict code of ethics that award candidates must adhere to, making it one of the few major awards with such a standard in the culinary industry. Nominees are vetted for their impact on the industry and community integrity, a lesser-known but increasingly vital component that sets this accolade apart.
