Tampa Bay Area Honors Veterans with Ceremonies, Parades, and Special Events

This Veterans Day, the Tampa Bay area is coming together to honor military veterans with parades, ceremonies, and exclusive offers. Here’s a roundup of events:

Parades and Ceremonies (partial list):

  • Veterans Parade: Saturday, 10 a.m., Main Street, Zephyrhills – Marching bands and community groups will honor veterans. Free..

  • Hillsborough County Tribute: Monday, 10 a.m., Veterans Memorial Park, Tampa – Celebrates veterans at a restored amphitheater. Free.

Special Celebrations:

  • Red, White, Brew: Friday, 5-10 p.m., Pop Stansell Park, Palm Harbor – Family-friendly celebration honoring a WWII veteran, with music and food trucks.

  • Curlew Hills Memorial: Monday, 9:30 a.m., Palm Harbor – Annual ceremony with speakers and performances. Free.

Discounts and Free Museum Admission:

  • The James Museum: Free for veterans and military families. Monday, 150 Central Ave., St. Petersburg.

  • The Dali Museum: Free for military members and one guest. Monday, 10 a.m.-6 p.m., 1 Dali Blvd., St. Petersburg.

One surprising fact about Veterans Day is that it wasn't always celebrated on November 11, and it briefly lost its fixed date altogether. Originally designated as Armistice Day to honor the end of World War I on November 11, 1918, the day was transformed into Veterans Day in 1954 to honor all veterans.

In 1968, Congress passed the Uniform Monday Holiday Act, which moved the celebration of Veterans Day to the fourth Monday in October, creating a long weekend.

However, the change proved unpopular, as many people wanted to keep the observance tied to November 11 due to its historical significance. After a public outcry, President Gerald Ford signed a law in 1975 that restored Veterans Day to its original date, November 11, starting in 1978.

This is why Veterans Day is observed on different days in the U.S. and other countries that honor Armistice Day, such as the U.K. and France, where it’s still closely associated with World War I.

USF Student’s Passion for Real Estate Blossoms Through Industry Mentorship

TAMPA – USF senior Josh Streitmatter’s journey from classroom to career in real estate took a full-circle turn this fall. Initially inspired by guest lectures from Bill Eshenbaugh and Ryan Sampson of Eshenbaugh Land Company, Streitmatter admired their down-to-earth approach to commercial land brokerage.

Eager to learn more, Streitmatter sought mentorship, which evolved into coffees, breakfasts, and eventually an internship at Eshenbaugh’s firm. In August, he joined as a research and marketing associate, helping draft property summaries and build client relationships.

This semester, Streitmatter returned to his real estate class, sharing his hands-on experiences with his peers. Graduating in December, he’s set to continue with Eshenbaugh Land Company, grateful for mentors who encouraged his authentic approach to the industry.
