Councilman Calls for Independent Flooding Investigation in North Tampa

After Hurricane Milton’s destructive rains flooded North Tampa’s Flood Zone X areas last month, residents are calling for accountability. Milton a Category 3 hurricane, brought 13.8 inches of rain in 24 hours, overwhelming drainage systems thought secure against severe flooding.
Councilman Luis Viera, whose district includes the affected neighborhoods, has urged an independent study to assess Tampa’s stormwater infrastructure. “These families never saw it coming,” Viera said.
Experts, like USF professor Taryn Sabia, link the flooding to power outages and aging infrastructure that compromised critical drainage pumps. At Timberfalls Apartments, residents faced sudden eviction orders despite limited interior damage. Discussions between city and county officials will address systemic flood response improvements.
Ananda Farm: Tampa Bay’s New Adventure Park Offers Family Fun and Festive Cheer

Ananda Farm, Tampa Bay’s latest family adventure park, has opened just in time for the holiday season at 579 Ken Hubbard Road in Terra Ceia. Originally a community farm, it now offers immersive activities, seasonal events, and delicious farm-to-table dining, ideal for a family day trip.
Attractions include the Dragon Fruit Lair Tree House, Passion Fruit Jumping Pads, and the Coconut Circuit Trike Track. Kids can enjoy tug-of-war, a hay castle, and giant bubbles, with photo spots like a pumpkin patch and couch swing.
For adults, Ananda Farm provides local brews at The Nest Rooftop Beer Garden, fine wines, and chef-prepared meals crafted with local ingredients. Through Dec. 15, their ‘Savor The Season’ festival adds holiday decor, special dishes, and themed events.
Ananda Farm is open Thursdays through Sundays, offering day tickets, holiday passes, and group rates. Details are available at anandafarm.com.

Insurance Fraud Drives Rising Premiums in Florida

Florida officials say fraudulent contractor practices are a major factor in the state’s insurance crisis, adding costs for damages that never occurred. Homeowner Kim Ferris learned this the hard way when a contractor claimed her roof was damaged and initiated a costly replacement contract she unknowingly signed. Despite later discovering there was no damage, her insurer covered nearly $40,000.
Although Florida recently banned contractors from directly filing claims, enforcement remains challenging. Insurance fraud arrests have slowly increased, but the Department of Financial Services remains overwhelmed with cases.
The state now offers up to $25,000 for tips leading to contractor fraud convictions, hoping to combat rising premiums statewide.
