on Dec. 7

Step inside some of Hyde Park’s most stunning homes during the annual Old Hyde Park Home Tour on Saturday, Dec. 7. This walking tour offers a rare chance to see the interiors of historic South Tampa homes blending Old Florida charm with modern design.

Notable stops include the Lickerman house, a 1910s blend of Victorian and Craftsman styles, featuring handmade tiles, original artwork, and Paris-inspired décor. Another highlight is a century-old home adorned with hand-painted wallpaper showcasing flowers and 3D butterflies.

Docents guide visitors through first floors, sharing historical insights.

The tour includes local food, drinks, and music from Gasparilla Music Festival artists, with a driveway rock performance outside one featured home.

Tickets are $30 in advance or $35 at the event. Check-in begins at 726 S. Oregon Ave.

Duct-Taped Banana Sets Auction Record

in NYC

A banana duct-taped to a wall, Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan's "Comedian," sold for $6.2 million at a Sotheby’s auction in New York. The buyer, cryptocurrency entrepreneur Justin Sun, now owns the rights to replicate the piece.

Initially a sensation at Art Basel Miami Beach in 2019, the work drew crowds who debated its meaning—satirical commentary on art's excesses or a bold joke? The original banana even made headlines when another artist ate it.

At Sotheby’s, bidding began at $800,000 and soared past $5 million, with auctioneer Oliver Barker joking, "Don't let it slip away." Sun called the piece a bridge between "art, memes, and cryptocurrency." He also plans to eat the banana soon, continuing its legacy.

Clogged Drains Make Black Friday a

‘Brown Friday’ for Plumbers

Forget Black Friday — for plumbers, the day after Thanksgiving is "Brown Friday," the busiest day of the year.

Roto-Rooter sees a 50% spike in calls compared to a typical Friday, with Thanksgiving weekend generating 21% more business than other weekends. Mr. Rooter agrees, citing clogged kitchen drains as a major culprit rather than toilets.

"Thanksgiving dinner puts enormous strain on sinks, with grease, peelings, and oily turkey drippings creating blockages," said Paul Abrams, Roto-Rooter spokesperson.

Prevention Tips

  • Avoid Grease in Drains: Grease solidifies and clogs pipes.

  • Trash Scraps: Poultry skin, bones, rice, and pasta should go in the trash or compost, not disposals.

  • Run the Disposal: Keep it running while adding scraps.

  • No Wet Wipes: These don’t dissolve and may block pipes.

  • Offer Plungers: Avoid guest embarrassment.
