Tampa Mom Leads Charge for School Therapy Reform in Hillsborough

Hillsborough County Schools updated their Private Instruction Personnel (PIP) policy after a year of advocacy by Tampa mother Tamara Perez. The revised policy now allows private therapists, including applied behavior analysis (ABA) providers, to assist students during instructional time in all classrooms. Previously, this was up to principals' discretion.

Perez’s efforts stem from her experience with her son, Grayson, diagnosed with autism at age 3. She says having ABA therapy at school has been life-changing, boosting his confidence and social skills. In November, he was named “Student of the Month.”

Perez founded the “Project ABA Rights” Facebook group to connect families and push for similar reforms statewide. She’s also launched an online petition to advocate for broader policy changes.

Tampa’s MOSI Plans Nation’s 2nd-Largest Planetarium

Tampa’s Museum of Science and Industry (MOSI) is set to become a national STEM destination with the transformation of its vacant IMAX theater into the second-largest digital planetarium in the U.S.

Slated for completion in 2025, the planetarium will feature a 300-seat theater—six times the size of MOSI’s current one—and a massive quarter-acre screen offering 360-degree, high-definition experiences.

MOSI President John Smith highlighted the versatility of the planetarium, which will showcase everything from space exploration to underwater adventures and laser music shows. “The more immersive and exciting it is, the more it inspires young minds to explore STEM careers,” Smith said.

This project aligns with the revitalization of the surrounding area, including USF’s stadium renovations and Temple Terrace’s downtown updates.

Tampa International Airport (TPA) has been named the best large airport and top dining destination in the USA Today 2024 10Best Readers' Choice poll. Serving nearly 24 million passengers in 2023, TPA offers an experience that transforms air travel from a rushed necessity to a moment of relaxation and discovery.

With unique amenities like public art installations, a 21-foot-tall flamingo statue, a 6-foot-tall fish tank from the show Tanked, and the on-site Tampa Airport Marriott, TPA stands out as more than just a transit hub. It even offers free public art and history tours, scavenger hunts for kids, and family travel rentals.

Where TPA truly shines is its food scene. Highlights include Bavaro's Pizza Napoletana & Pastaria, ranked sixth for grab-and-go dining, along with Goody Goody, Burger 21, Cigar City Brewing, and Dylan’s Candy Bar.
