Tampa Bay Ranks Third Nationally in New Business Applications

Tampa Bay has emerged as a hub for entrepreneurs, ranking third in the nation for new business applications in 2024. Over 90,000 applications were filed this year, nearly doubling since 2019, when the figure was around 50,000.

The region’s growth is driven by an influx of new residents, particularly from the Northeast, drawn by Florida’s sunny climate and lack of personal income tax. Many aspiring business owners also cited a shift in priorities after the COVID-19 pandemic.

“A lot of people lost their jobs during COVID and realized they weren’t as stable as they thought,” said Brock Laramie, founder of Young Entrepreneurs of America.

Most entrepreneurs are starting businesses as side ventures rather than quitting their jobs, creating a surge of startups that benefit the local economy by generating jobs and improving living standards.

The Tampa Chamber of Commerce notes this trend is transforming the region into a thriving hub for innovation and opportunity.

‘Weird Al’ Yankovic to End 2025 Tour in Tampa Bay

Five-time Grammy winner “Weird Al” Yankovic is bringing his humor and iconic hits to Tampa Bay as he wraps up his “Bigger & Weirder” 2025 tour. The legendary parodist will perform at BayCafe Sound in Clearwater on Thursday, September 25.

Promising fan-favorite tracks and some never-before-performed songs, Yankovic’s super-sized show will feature his longtime band joined by four additional musicians for an enhanced concert experience.

Tampa Bay is one of only two Florida stops, with the other in St. Augustine on September 24. VIP packages for the tour are available for $239, though general ticket information for the Clearwater show has not yet been released.

The 65-year-old artist recently gained buzz for his cover of Chapel Roan’s “Hot To Go,” performed alongside actor Will Forte.

Illumin Drone Shows Launches in Florida: Aerial Magic Awaits

Illumin Drone Shows, Canada’s leading drone entertainment company, is expanding to the U.S., with Florida as its launchpad. Known for stunning aerial light shows, Illumin aims to captivate audiences across the Southern U.S. with cutting-edge technology and sustainable entertainment.

Illumin’s displays range from intimate events to massive spectacles, choreographing thousands of drones to create breathtaking designs, vibrant light patterns, and even interactive media like logos and QR codes. Each show combines music, light, and movement to tell a unique story.

Having wowed Canadian audiences with groundbreaking performances—like a record-breaking 600-drone show at Friday Harbour—Illumin now brings its expertise and commitment to safety to the U.S. market.

“We want to spark imagination and incite wonder,” said CEO Christian Ilumin. Future plans include augmented reality integrations and collaborations with artists to redefine aerial entertainment.

Florida Couple Shocked by $1,147 Water Bill Despite Not Being Home

A St. Petersburg, Florida couple was stunned to receive a $1,147 water bill—seven times their usual $150—even though they weren’t home during the billing period. Melanie and Richard Scheiderman believe the high charges resulted from a leak triggered when the city restored water after back-to-back hurricanes earlier this year.

Following Hurricanes Helene and Milton, the city temporarily shut off water. Melanie claims the system’s repressurization caused a slow leak in their bathroom, which their landlord confirmed with a leak detection specialist.

However, the city denies responsibility, stating that the system was repressurized gradually to avoid pressure spikes. They attribute the high bill to a plumbing issue unrelated to the hurricanes, based on a meter reading taken weeks later.

The city has urged the Scheidermans to use its leak adjustment process for assistance. Residents affected by billing issues can contact St. Petersburg’s utility department for support.
