Were Ybor City’s Tunnels for Smuggling or Sewers? The Debate Endures

Beneath Tampa’s historic Ybor City lies a network of underground tunnels, first discovered in 2018 near 12th Street and 6th Avenue.

These tunnels, featuring brick arches, rail systems, and double locks, sparked speculation about their purpose. Many believed they were used during the Prohibition era for smuggling alcohol and other contraband, as Tampa was a hub for organized crime in the 1920s.

However, researchers and historians have since concluded that the tunnels were likely part of a late-19th-century dual-use storm and sanitary sewer system. Their design elements are consistent with sewer systems of the era, dampening theories of illicit activities.

Despite this clarification, the tunnels remain shrouded in mystery. With many sections filled in and access points lost, fully documenting their extent seems unlikely.

Wrong-Way DUI Crash on I-275 Leaves Two Injured, $250K in Damages

A suspected DUI crash on I-275 in St. Petersburg caused over $250,000 in damages and left two people seriously injured, according to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP).

On January 5, Rontonio Scott drove northbound in the southbound lanes, colliding head-on with several vehicles. Dashcam footage revealed the dangerous wrong-way driving that led to the crash, which involved four vehicles and left one woman with life-threatening injuries.

FHP troopers who arrived on the scene reported Scott showing signs of impairment. After further investigation, authorities arrested him on January 12.

Baker Mayfield’s $100M Contract Sparks Record-Breaking Season for Buccaneers

Baker Mayfield’s 2024 season with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers has been nothing short of remarkable, following a surreal start to his contract extension.

During a dinner with friends last August, Mayfield learned of his three-year, $100 million deal via an unexpected text from Buccaneers GM Jason Licht. Initially stunned, Mayfield quickly celebrated with his companions, setting the tone for his career-best season.

Mayfield’s efforts propelled Tampa Bay to another NFC South title and a Wild Card playoff berth. He set franchise records with 4,500 passing yards, 41 touchdowns, a 71.4% completion rate, and a 106.8 passer rating, joining NFL legends in achieving over 4,500 yards and 40 touchdowns in a single season.

As Tampa Bay gears up to face the Washington Commanders, offensive coordinator Liam Coen emphasized that Mayfield’s leadership and playmaking ability are central to the team’s playoff aspirations.

Steinbrenner Field Upgrades to Provide Rays Players with Top Amenities

The Tampa Bay Rays will play their 2025 season at Steinbrenner Field, the New York Yankees’ spring training complex, due to damage at Tropicana Field caused by Hurricane Milton.

The ballpark, recently renovated by the Yankees, offers upgraded amenities, including a state-of-the-art weight room, expanded training areas, players’ and family lounges, and new offices. Although the Rays won’t have access to the Yankees’ equipment or technology, the modern facilities could positively impact team morale.

The temporary move has already influenced Tampa Bay’s roster strategy, with management retaining key players like Yandy Díaz and Brandon Lowe amid concerns that free agents may hesitate to sign with the team.

After finishing fourth in the competitive AL East with an 80-82 record in 2024, the Rays face a challenging season ahead. Tropicana Field is expected to reopen in 2026.
