$4M Smart Tech Grant Targets Selmon Expressway Congestion

The Tampa-Hillsborough Expressway Authority (THEA) is set to tackle traffic congestion on the Selmon Expressway with cutting-edge technology, thanks to a $4 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy. The funding will support the implementation of a smart eco-driving system designed to enhance traffic flow and lower vehicle emissions.

This innovative system uses real-time data to communicate with vehicles, encouraging smoother driving patterns and reducing stop-and-go traffic. By minimizing idling and improving fuel efficiency, the program aims to create a more eco-friendly and efficient commute for Tampa drivers.

The initiative is part of a broader effort to integrate smart technology into urban infrastructure, showcasing how technology can address everyday challenges like traffic congestion.

Check out the video for a closer look at how THEA plans to transform the Selmon Expressway into a model for sustainable transportation.

Wesley Chapel Welcomes Johns Hopkins’ Latest Pediatric Facility

Groundbreaking for a new Johns Hopkins Children’s Hospital in Wesley Chapel is set for March 27, 2025, marking the healthcare institution’s latest expansion in Florida.

Purchased in early 2024, the 114-acre site off Interstate 75 and Overpass Road will house a state-of-the-art facility aimed at providing comprehensive pediatric care.

The new hospital will feature 56 beds, an imaging center, diagnostic testing, a pharmacy, an outpatient center, dining facilities, and outdoor spaces. This project joins the institution’s existing presence in the state, including Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital in St. Petersburg and outpatient centers in Tampa and Sarasota.

Recognized as Florida’s top children’s hospital for 2024-2025 by U.S. News & World Report, Johns Hopkins aims to further its reputation for excellence with this expansion, bringing world-class care closer to families in the growing Pasco County region.
