Connected City Residents Rally Against Rezoning Amid Park Shortfall

The Pasco County Planning Commission approved rezoning for the Tall Timbers project in the Connected City pilot program, permitting 380 residential units and 180,000 square feet of commercial space. Despite approval, residents and some officials raised concerns over unfulfilled promises of parks and recreational amenities.

Residents argued that the rezoning contradicts the community hub's comprehensive plan, which emphasized single-family homes, parks, and cultural spaces. They voiced concerns about flooding, traffic, and conservation impacts.

Commissioner Jon Moody proposed a one-year moratorium on new developments in Connected City to address inconsistencies in its land development code, a motion that passed 6-1. Officials acknowledged the shortcomings, with Planning Services director Nectorios Pittos admitting the lack of parks may have been "aspirational."

While plans for a park are reportedly under discussion, residents remain skeptical, calling for tangible action to fulfill the community’s original vision.

Pasco Considers New Rules for Children’s
Library Books

Pasco County is weighing new restrictions on children's access to certain library materials following county commission concerns over “disturbing” content.

Proposed changes include a new "child library card" limiting children under 16 to juvenile books, excluding young adult and adult materials. Parents would need to register children and choose between restricted and unrestricted cards.

Additionally, the plan involves reviewing books in children's sections and relocating titles deemed unsuitable for minors to adult areas, ensuring parental oversight without removing materials entirely.

Some residents, including parents and librarians, oppose the move, arguing libraries should represent diverse viewpoints and foster open access. Pasco's library director, Sean McGarvey, emphasized the proposal aims to balance access with parental control.

The changes, inspired by similar policies in Hillsborough County, could take several months to implement and require county commission approval. The debate mirrors broader statewide discussions on book access in schools and public libraries.

How to Talk to Kids About Tragedies and
Traumatic News

Helping children cope with tragedies requires thoughtful communication.

Start by asking what they know and addressing their feelings. Keep explanations age-appropriate, straightforward, and free of graphic details. Avoid repetitive exposure to distressing media, especially for young children, and consider previewing content before discussing it with older kids.

Parents should provide clear, honest information while emphasizing support. For instance, explaining a distant crisis with context helps children understand its relevance. For children with developmental delays or Autism Spectrum Disorder, tailor your approach to their developmental level and comfort needs.

Signs of struggling include sleep problems, physical complaints, behavioral changes, and emotional issues like anxiety or depression. If concerned, seek advice from pediatricians, teachers, or mental health professionals.

Ongoing dialogue is key. Reassure children that it’s okay to feel upset and emphasize family and community support.

Buccaneers Retain Promising Rookie QB
Michael Pratt

(a young buc QB)

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have signed rookie quarterback Michael Pratt to a futures contract, ensuring he remains on their roster heading into the 2025 offseason.

Pratt joined the Buccaneers' practice squad in 2024 after being released by the Green Bay Packers, who had drafted him in the seventh round of the 2024 NFL Draft.

While Pratt did not see game action during his brief elevations to the active roster, his preseason performance with the Packers showcased his potential, with 178 passing yards, one touchdown, and one interception across three games.

At Tulane, Pratt enjoyed a record-setting college career, finishing as the program's all-time leader in passing yards (9,602), touchdowns (90), and completion percentage (60.6%). He also excelled as a dual-threat quarterback, amassing over 1,100 rushing yards and 28 touchdowns.

Pratt joins Baker Mayfield as one of two quarterbacks currently under contract for 2025, as Kyle Trask enters free agency. The Buccaneers hope Pratt’s development will bolster their depth at quarterback.
