Hillsborough County Unveils Smart Traffic Tech to Enhance Safety and Reduce Delays

Hillsborough County has rolled out a new smart traffic system aimed at reducing congestion, improving emergency response times, and enhancing pedestrian safety. The Emergency Vehicle Preemption (EVP) system is being deployed across 600 intersections and 175 emergency vehicles, using GPS, cellular networks, and radio communication to detect approaching emergency responders. When a fire truck or ambulance nears an intersection, EVP temporarily changes traffic lights to green while holding cross-traffic at red, clearing the way for faster response times.

The system also collects real-time traffic data every five minutes, 24/7, allowing engineers to optimize signals far more efficiently than traditional manual traffic counts. Previously, adjusting traffic patterns could take five to ten years, but now, updates can happen in as little as six to 12 months.

Pedestrian safety is another key focus. Crosswalk signals are now programmed to start before vehicles get a green light, ensuring better visibility and reducing accidents. Additionally, the system allows for quick adjustments in case of accidents, road closures, or construction detours.

Hillsborough County officials say the new system will make roads safer, smarter, and more efficient for everyone.

NASA: Newly Tracked Asteroid Has 1% Chance of Hitting Earth in 2032

NASA has released new animation and imagery of asteroid 2024 YR4, a 130- to 300-foot-wide space rock that has a more than 1% chance of impacting Earth on December 22, 2032. This is the only known large asteroid with an impact probability above 1%, according to NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL).

The Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System (ATLAS) first detected 2024 YR4 in December 2024, capturing images using a telescope in Chile. The asteroid’s impact risk has gradually increased over the past month, leading to a Torino Scale 3 rating, which is rare. If it were to hit Earth, potential impact zones span the eastern Pacific, South America, the Atlantic Ocean, Africa, the Arabian Sea, and South Asia.

However, NASA reassures that further observations could lower the risk. The asteroid will pass by Earth again in 2028, offering another opportunity for scientists to refine its trajectory.

Asteroids Can Have Their Own Moons! 🌑

While we often think of asteroids as solitary space rocks, some actually have their own moons! These are called binary asteroids, and in rare cases, even triple asteroid systems exist. One of the most famous examples is Asteroid 243 Ida, which has a tiny moon named Dactyl. Scientists believe about 15% of near-Earth asteroids could have small companions.

Even more fascinating, when two asteroids orbit each other closely, they can sometimes merge into a new, larger asteroid over time. This process, called rubble pile accumulation, helps explain why some asteroids are strangely shaped! 🚀

Super Bowl Ticket Prices: A Look Through the Years

Super Bowl ticket prices have skyrocketed since the first game in 1967, when a ticket cost just $12—about $87 today when adjusted for inflation. Prices remained under $100 until 1984, when they jumped to $60 ($145 today). By the mid-1990s, tickets hit $350 and have continued their steep climb ever since.

The first $1,000 ticket appeared in 2009, and in the last decade, prices have soared even higher. The most expensive Super Bowl ticket to date was in 2023, when fans paid an average of $9,915 to watch the Chiefs vs. Eagles.

In 2024, tickets slightly dropped to $9,400, and for Super Bowl LIX (2025), they are currently priced around $6,304.

Here’s a look at historical Super Bowl ticket prices:

How Much Do Super Bowl Performers Make? The Answer May Surprise You

With millions of viewers tuning in each year, the Super Bowl halftime show is one of the most coveted performance slots in entertainment. But while the spectacle is massive, the paycheck isn’t. Headliner Kendrick Lamar and special guest SZA will receive only a modest union-mandated fee, typically around $1,000 per day for rehearsals and the show. The NFL does not pay performers beyond this amount, though it does cover travel and production costs.

The real value of the performance comes from exposure. In 2023, Rihanna’s halftime show drew 115 million viewers, causing her streaming numbers to skyrocket. In 2022, Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Eminem, and Kendrick Lamar all saw huge boosts in music sales following their performance.

Despite the lack of direct payment, production costs for the halftime show often range from $10-20 million, with the NFL covering most of the expenses. Some artists, like The Weeknd in 2021, have even contributed their own money to enhance their set.

Lamar and SZA will take the stage during Super Bowl LIX on Feb. 9, 2025, airing on Fox at 6:30 p.m. EST.
