Tampa’s River O’Green Festival Returns with Bigger Attractions and a ‘Leprechaun’s Hideout’

Tampa’s River O’Green Festival is making a grand return on March 15, 2025, promising its biggest celebration yet at Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park. As always, the highlight will be dyeing the Hillsborough River green with a non-toxic, biodegradable dye that meets EPA standards.

New this year is the “Leprechaun’s Hideout”, offering shade and Irish brews. The festival, running from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., will feature live music, Irish dancers, spoken word performances, and a pet costume contest at the Barrymore Hotel.

The Tampa Rough Riders’ St. Patrick’s Day Parade kicks off downtown at 3 p.m., featuring floats, music, and beads. Expect road closures on Ashley Drive, Gasparilla Plaza, and Cass Street, lifting between 7:30 and 8 p.m.

Parking is available at Fort Brooke Garage, Twiggs Garage, and Ybor City with TECO Streetcar access. HART’s Route 1 is currently fare-free.

One astonishing but little-known fact about St. Patrick's Day is that St. Patrick wasn’t actually Irish!

He was born in Roman Britain (likely in present-day England, Scotland, or Wales) around the late 4th or early 5th century. At the age of 16, he was kidnapped by Irish raiders and taken to Ireland as a slave. He later escaped, but after becoming a Christian missionary, he returned to Ireland to spread Christianity.

So, the patron saint of Ireland wasn’t originally from Ireland at all!

GloRilla to Headline Free Super Saturday Concert in Tampa During NCAA Women’s Final Four

Tampa is set for an electrifying weekend as the NCAA Women’s Final Four takes over downtown from April 5-7. Among the marquee events is the Super Saturday Concert, featuring Grammy-nominated hip-hop artist GloRilla at Curtis Hixon Park on Saturday, April 5.

This free concert kicks off with DJ ReRe at 6:45 p.m., followed by GloRilla at 8 p.m. Gates open at 6 p.m.

GloRilla, a rising star from North Memphis, Tennessee, continues to dominate charts with her latest mixtape, Ehhthang Ehhthang, which has surpassed 550 million streams in the U.S.

The concert is part of the NCAA Women’s Final Four festivities, including Tourney Town at the Tampa Convention Center from April 3-6, offering food, games, and interactive experiences.

With thousands of fans expected, this concert will be a must-attend event. More details at NCAA.com/WomensFinalFour.

Scientist Working to Protect Florida Beaches from Hurricanes Fired Amid Federal Workforce Cuts

Michael Slattery, a physical scientist with the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), was abruptly fired on Feb. 14, halting his critical research on hurricane resilience in Madeira Beach and Sand Key.

Slattery had been working to improve storm surge forecasting and coastal erosion studies—data vital for local governments, first responders, and residents. His position was federally funded in response to Hurricane Ian, and internal performance reviews praised his leadership and contributions. Yet, his termination letter cited “failure to demonstrate fitness or qualifications.”

The mass firings under the Trump administration’s Interior Department workforce reductions have affected over 2,000 employees, including park rangers and scientists. U.S. Rep. Kathy Castor condemned the cuts as “shortsighted and dangerous.”

Slattery is appealing the decision, concerned about its impact on future employment and unemployment eligibility. Meanwhile, Madeira Beach’s erosion assessments remain uncertain, leaving a gap in critical storm protection research.

Stanford Researchers Discover Natural Molecule That Aids Weight Loss Without Ozempic’s
Side Effects

Stanford Medicine researchers have identified BRP, a naturally occurring molecule that suppresses appetite and promotes weight loss similarly to semaglutide (Ozempic) but without side effects like nausea, constipation, or muscle loss.

BRP functions through a distinct metabolic pathway, targeting neurons in the hypothalamus, which regulates appetite and metabolism. Unlike Ozempic, which affects the gut, pancreas, and other organs, BRP’s targeted approach may offer a safer, more effective weight-loss solution.

In studies, mice and minipigs given BRP ate 50% less within an hour. Obese mice lost fat after 14 days of treatment, while untreated mice gained weight. The molecule also improved glucose and insulin tolerance without impacting movement, hydration, or anxiety levels.

The research, published in Nature, was led by Dr. Katrin Svensson, who has co-founded a company to advance BRP into human trials.
