FEMA's Future: Tampa Mayor Castor Appointed to Key Review Team

Tampa Mayor Jane Castor has been appointed by President Donald Trump to the newly formed FEMA Review Council, announced Monday.

This bipartisan group will focus on reforming and streamlining the nation's emergency management and disaster response systems. Led by Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem and Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, the council was established via a January executive order.

Castor joins notable figures like Texas Governor Greg Abbott, Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin, and FEMA Regional Administrator Robert Fenton.

The council’s mission is to advise the president on recommended changes to improve FEMA's efficiency and effectiveness.

The Homeland Security news release listed 13 of the 20 appointees, highlighting a mix of political, emergency management, and private sector leaders.

Military Medicine's AI Lessons: How Healthcare is Being Transformed

Artificial intelligence (AI) is already revolutionizing healthcare, reshaping diagnostics, resource management, and patient engagement.

Retired U.S. Navy Captain Dr. Hassan Tetteh discussed these changes during a recent book event, highlighting lessons from military medicine. His book, Smarter Healthcare With AI, outlines how AI's adoption mirrors historic medical advances, like scurvy prevention in the 18th century. Real-world successes include Johns Hopkins boosting complex case capacity by 60% and rural hospitals cutting cardiac arrests by over 50%.

However, systemic obstacles like fragmented incentives hamper broader adoption. Tetteh stresses the need for validation, scalability, and saleability.

With a looming global shortage of 15 million healthcare workers by 2030, AI is seen as crucial for maintaining care levels.

Despite risks like algorithmic bias, Tetteh remains optimistic: AI will enhance, not replace, clinicians, helping them make smarter, faster decisions while keeping patient care at the center.

*We are witnessing the start of a new era in technology with AI much like in the early 2000’s with personal computers.

Slow acceptance of computers hurt those who resisted that major change.

Hero Dog Detects Owner’s Breast Cancer
Before Doctors

Who needs AI when you have a dog

Breanna Bortner, a 31-year-old Minnesota woman, credits her dog, Mochi, with detecting her breast cancer before doctors did.

In 2023, Bortner discovered a lump in her breast, but it was her cockapoo’s unusual fixation on her right side that alerted her something was wrong. Six weeks later, a biopsy confirmed stage 2B triple-negative invasive ductal carcinoma.

Throughout her grueling 16 rounds of chemotherapy, Bortner leaned on Mochi for comfort and motivation, even renaming chemo sessions “healing sessions” to stay positive. Tasks like walking and caring for Mochi helped her fight through treatment.

Today, nearly a year post-treatment, Bortner mentors others battling cancer through her blog, Brave Beautiful Boobies. Doctors confirm dogs’ remarkable ability to detect cancer-related odors, further highlighting Mochi’s life-saving instincts. Bortner says her “soul dog” gave her a reason to keep going — and saved her life.

Brew Match: Finding the Coffee That Fits Your Flavor

Finding the perfect coffee means more than grabbing a bag off the shelf—it’s about matching flavor, origin, and brew style to your preferences.

Fresh Roasted Coffee makes that journey easier with a wide range of clean, mold-free beans tailored to diverse tastes. For cold brew lovers, the Frostbite Organic Cold Brew blends dark chocolate, nougat, and lavender.

Craving the island vibe? Try the 100% Hawaiian Kona, with coconut and molasses notes, or the Jamaica Blue Mountain Blend, a silky, fruity luxury.

Beginners will enjoy the Organic Mexican, a mild, nutty coffee with brown sugar and pear tones.

Whether you enjoy your coffee bold or bright, hot or cold, the right roast is out there. The key? Know your palate and how you like your brew—espresso, pour-over, or drip—and choose accordingly.
