McCullers Faces Death Threats Against Family
After Tough Outing

(What is this world coming to?)

Houston Astros pitcher and Tampa native Lance McCullers Jr. revealed he received online death threats targeting his children following a rough start Saturday against the Cincinnati Reds. In just his second game since the 2022 World Series, McCullers gave up seven runs in one-third of an inning during the Astros’ 13-9 loss.

While criticism is expected in pro sports, McCullers described disturbing messages threatening to stab his kids, calling it heartbreaking as a father. “There should be some type of decency,” he said.

The threats have been reported to the Houston Police Department and MLB security. Astros manager Joe Espada expressed outrage, calling the situation “very sad.” McCullers and his wife, Kara, have two young daughters.

Despite ongoing injury battles, McCullers said he just wants to focus on returning to form, without fearing for his family’s safety in public. “It’s tough to deal with,” he said.

After that bad news story - how about some good news?!

Jelly Roll Lifts 9-Year-Old Fan’s Dreams On Stage
in Tampa

Nine-year-old Lily Juliette’s dream came true at Tampa’s Thunder Country Festival when country star Jelly Roll invited her on stage to sing his hit “Liar” in front of a roaring crowd. Holding a clever sign, Lily caught the singer’s attention and was lifted over the barricade by her father, Stijn Van Colen, before being helped onstage.

With Jelly Roll kneeling beside her, Lily belted out lyrics with confidence, earning thunderous applause. The singer then raised her hand and delivered an empowering message: “That voice in your head saying you’re not awesome is a liar.”

Lily, who has sung since she could talk and runs a YouTube channel with Jelly Roll covers, called it an unforgettable moment. Her father echoed that sentiment, thanking the artist for his kindness: “You gave her a memory that will stay with her forever.”

Lily now dreams of one day performing on big stages herself.

Wesley Chapel Punches Ticket to State After Another Thrilling Series Win

Wesley Chapel baseball is headed back to the Class 5A state semifinals after defeating River Ridge 8-2 in a decisive regional title game. The Wildcats jumped ahead early, scoring seven runs in the first two innings, and never looked back. Senior pitcher Chase Flemming tossed a complete-game gem, his third Saturday start in as many weeks, leading the Wildcats (18-14) past their third straight must-win series.

Despite injuries to stars Mills Carrillo and Sean Roche, every starter contributed with a hit, and Zorre Wright broke out of a postseason slump with a key home run. Coach Tripp Merrell praised the team’s resilience and credited their playoff-tough schedule and best-of-3 format for their readiness. They’ll face Tallahassee Lincoln Thursday in Fort Myers, with a potential state championship on the line Saturday.

“It’s been Flemming on Saturday for three weeks,” Merrell said. “And the kids just keep showing up when it matters most.”

Day old Rays news, yes, but still worth celebrating:

Rain, Errors, and a Rally: Rays Walk Off in Wild One at Steinbrenner

Weather delays, defensive miscues, and tight late-inning drama didn’t stop the Rays from notching a thrilling 3-2 walkoff win over the Brewers on Saturday at Steinbrenner Field. The game featured two weather delays — a first in franchise home-game history — and an unsteady ninth inning before Travis Jankowski delivered his first MLB walkoff hit, scoring Kameron Misner.

Starter Taj Bradley pushed through the delay to pitch six strong innings, and fiery closer Pete Fairbanks escaped a ninth-inning jam despite two errors and a walk. Misner walked, stole second, and scored when Jankowski — signed just weeks ago — singled to left.

It was a milestone moment for Jankowski in his 699th big league game. The win marked the Rays’ second straight at home after dropping seven in a row and showed, as manager Kevin Cash said, “We’re feeling pretty good.”
