Pasco ‘Bootcamp’ Equips Workers for High-Tech Manufacturing Future

With automation transforming the factory floor, Pasco County’s AmSkills bootcamp is training workers to fill a critical talent gap.

The non-profit’s free training program prepares individuals to troubleshoot, repair, and maintain automated systems in manufacturing environments. It's part of a push to address a national crisis: nearly 500,000 open manufacturing jobs, with millions more expected in the next decade.

John Graham, a Navy veteran and former paramedic, is among those stepping up. “I’m a soldier man. Nothing scares me,” he said. At AmSkills, he’s learning the technical skills needed to thrive in a new career.

When one cell goes down, a company loses money,” said Tyler Mudano, AmSkills' director of program services, emphasizing the need for skilled technicians.

Companies like Jabil, Lockheed Martin, and Coca-Cola hire AmSkills graduates, making this an opportunity for stable careers with growth potential.

Additional bootcamps are planned in Pasco and Pinellas Counties.

Stray Cat George Walks Nearly 3 Miles Home After Shelter Escape

A beloved stray cat named George stunned neighbors when he returned to his Lakeland community after vanishing from a local shelter.

George, a ginger tabby known around Loma Verde for his gentle nature and morning naps in a favorite chair, was taken to SPCA Florida for a free neutering procedure. But when his caregiver returned, George had escaped into the nearby woods.

Despite traps set by shelter staff and food left out by neighbors, George was nowhere to be found—until he reappeared a week later, slightly thinner, but safe and sound in his caregiver’s carport.

According to SPCA Florida, George journeyed 2.7 miles, crossing busy roads and unknown dangers—all while recovering from surgery.

After a hearty meal and a good brushing, George settled in for a nap only a survivor could enjoy,” the release noted.

George’s determination highlights the deep connection between stray animals and the communities that care for them.

Mystery Lovers Unite: SleuthFest Returns to St. Pete

St. Petersburg is once again the scene of the crime — literary crime, that is. SleuthFest, Florida’s premier conference for writers of mystery, thriller, and suspense fiction, kicks off May 15-18 at the Hilton Bayfront.

Event co-chair Cheryl Hollon emphasizes the conference’s mission: to support emerging writers with workshops on everything from forensic techniques to navigating the publishing industry.

The four-day event offers face time with bestselling authors, expert panels, and hands-on sessions that unravel the complexities of writing gripping crime fiction.

Writing a novel sounds easy... but it’s got a lot of moving parts,” Hollon noted in an interview with Bay News 9.

For a full schedule and speaker lineup, visit SleuthFest.com.

Here’s an astonishing and little-known fact about writers conferences:

Some of the most successful publishing deals started in the hotel bar—not the official sessions.

While formal panels and workshops are valuable, many bestselling authors, agents, and editors credit late-night, off-the-clock conversations in hotel lobbies and bars as the real game-changers. These informal settings often lead to genuine connections, off-the-record advice, and spontaneous pitches that later turn into book deals or long-term mentorships.

Why it’s surprising: Most attendees assume success lies solely in scheduled programming. But the real magic often happens in those relaxed, unplanned moments where industry walls come down.

This is why many seasoned attendees say: “Don’t skip the social hours—they might change your career.”

Bucs Stack Up Firepower, Earn 'Most Dangerous' Offense Tag for 2025

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are arming quarterback Baker Mayfield with one of the NFL’s deepest receiver rooms heading into 2025. While many expected Tampa Bay to draft defense, they surprised analysts by picking Ohio State standout Emeka Egbuka, adding to a lineup already featuring Mike Evans, Chris Godwin, and Jalen McMillan.

Even seventh-rounder Tez Johnson (Oregon) joins a crowded, versatile group that includes Trey Palmer and Sterling Shepard. According to Pro Football Focus, the Bucs now possess "the deepest receiving corps in the NFL."

Mayfield enters his third year at the helm with new offensive coordinator Josh Grizzard, and expectations are sky-high. With this arsenal, Tampa Bay is favored to win the NFC South and contend deep into the playoffs.

If all the pieces click, this offense could be the NFL’s most lethal.
