Bob Buckhorn Sets the Stage for 2027 Tampa Mayoral Comeback

Former Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn is taking a significant step toward a 2027 mayoral run, signaling his intent through a private luncheon this week. The invitation-only event, hosted by Sheriff Chad Chronister, Lightning owner Jeff Vinik, and business leaders Kathleen Shanahan and Stuart Lasher, will gather key political and business influencers. The luncheon will focus on “what’s next for Tampa and for this campaign,” a thinly veiled nod to Buckhorn’s likely candidacy.

In a message to attendees, Buckhorn emphasized that Tampa’s post-2027 needs will differ greatly from when he last served. “Elections are about the future, not the past,” he wrote, referencing the city’s ongoing challenges and growth. While no official campaign launch has occurred, Buckhorn’s moves suggest he’s preparing early.

Potential rivals include City Councilman Bill Carlson and Property Appraiser Bob Henriquez, though Mayor Jane Castor is seen as a Buckhorn ally.

AI Smart Glasses Aim to Eliminate Surgical Medication Errors

A University of Washington team is testing AI-powered smart glasses to prevent medication errors, particularly in operating rooms. Dr. Kelly Michaelsen, an anesthesiologist, is leading research into "vial swap" mistakes, which account for 20% of all medication errors—typically when the wrong injectable drug is selected or mislabelled.

Her solution? Smart eyewear with an AI-enabled camera that scans vial and syringe labels in real time, flagging mismatches. In early trials, the system showed 99.6% accuracy in catching errors. The device could serve as a “second set of eyes” for clinicians and help avoid deadly dosing mistakes.

Beyond operating rooms, AI is also reshaping hospital billing. Dr. Michael Gao of SmarterDx noted AI could save part of the $500 billion U.S. hospitals spend annually on admin costs, by ensuring accurate billing and matching clinical records with financial data. The tech promises both improved safety and efficiency.

NFL’s Heaviest Player Aims to Make
Weightless Impact

Desmond Watson, Tampa Bay Buccaneers rookie defensive tackle, has made NFL history as the heaviest player ever, listed at 449 pounds. A Plant City, Florida native and former Florida Gator, Watson went undrafted but signed with his hometown team and now lines up beside Pro Bowler Vita Vea, his longtime idol.

Despite modest college stats, Watson is seen as a developmental talent with potential value in short-yardage scenarios like the controversial "tush push" play. His coaches are focusing on conditioning, aiming to increase his endurance.

Watson emphasizes he doesn’t want to be known just for his size. “I want to be known as a good football player,” he said. With the support of Bucs staff and a strong relationship with defensive line coach Charlie Strong, Watson is working to prove he belongs. “It’s still a work in progress,” he admits, “but this is a dream come true.”

When Lowe Hits, the Rays Win—And He’s Hitting

Brandon Lowe’s resurgence is fueling a hot streak for the Tampa Bay Rays, who earned their third straight home win Friday with a 3-1 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays. Lowe hit a two-run homer in the third inning—his ninth of the season—and made a key defensive play on a 113 mph liner.

Manager Kevin Cash credited Lowe’s growing confidence at the plate, noting he’s now 13-for-37 (.351) with four homers in his last 10 games. Notably, nearly 80% of Lowe’s home runs since 2022 have come in Rays wins.

Drew Rasmussen added six shutout innings, extending his streak to 12 scoreless frames. The Rays’ defense, including plays from Junior Caminero and Danny Jansen, backed him up. Despite issuing eight walks, Tampa Bay held the Jays to a single run—something they hadn’t done under those conditions in over a decade.

“We’re just trying to keep it going,” Lowe said.
