Wuhan Student Accused of Illegally Importing Biologic Samples

Chengxuan Han, a Chinese national and Ph.D. student from Huazhong University of Science and Technology in Wuhan, was arrested at Detroit Metro Airport and charged with smuggling biological materials into the U.S. and making false statements to federal officials.
Authorities allege that in 2024 and 2025, Han sent four concealed packages containing roundworm-related biological substances to contacts at a University of Michigan lab.
Upon her June 8 arrival on a J1 visa, U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers discovered that Han had deleted content from her device days prior and had lied about the shipments. During an FBI and Homeland Security interview, she admitted to the smuggling and deception.
The U.S. Attorney emphasized the national security risks and taxpayer concerns tied to the incident. The FBI, CBP, and ICE Homeland Security Investigations are conducting the ongoing investigation. Charges have been filed, but no conviction has occurred.
