Greens vs. Growth: Pasco Seeks Stronger Tree Laws

Pasco County’s Planning Commission is considering amendments to its nearly 20‑year‑old tree preservation ordinance (Land Development Code Section 802) to discourage developers from clear‑cutting and encourage maintaining tree canopies and protecting wetlands.
At a June 5 workshop, Commission members noted that current rules aren’t being enforced effectively: newer communities lack mature trees or proper replacements, as developers often opt to pay the $50‑per‑inch trunk removal fee—costing $1,000–1,500 per tree—rather than preserve existing canopy. Developers then plant smaller, slower‑growing replacements that take decades to mature.
Staff suggested studying successful programs in other Florida jurisdictions to emulate effective practices. Proposed options include raising removal fees and introducing incentives for developers to retain significant tree clusters and wetlands. While no timeline was set, the board committed to researching alternatives to strengthen the county’s tree‑preservation strategy.
Scoop Surprise: OddFellows Brings Flavor Funk to Wesley Chapel

OddFellows Ice Cream, a New York-based scoop shop known for its "classics with a twist," is opening a new location at The Shops at Wiregrass in Wesley Chapel.
The brand has built a cult following with flavors like Vanilla Bean and Cookies & Cream, alongside daring Limited Time Flavors such as Miso Peanut Butter Brownie, Ginger Miso, and Black Sesame Cookies & Cream. With a philosophy of “compulsive creativity,”
OddFellows has crafted over 500 unique flavors since its Brooklyn launch in 2013.
The Wesley Chapel spot will be its second in the Tampa Bay area, adding a bold new flavor experience to the region’s dessert scene. While an opening date hasn’t been confirmed, franchise paperwork is in motion, signaling the scoop shop is well on its way.

Rays Complete First Sweep of Mets with Dominant
9–0 Win
Shane Baz pitched a gem, combining with three relievers on a five-hitter as the Tampa Bay Rays blanked the Mets 9–0 Sunday in New York. Baz (6–3) struck out six over 6⅔ innings, threw a career-high 106 pitches, and held the Mets hitless in 12 at-bats with runners on base. The Rays, now surging offensively, outscored New York 24–9 over the series.
Jonathan Aranda’s two-run double broke open the game in the fifth, and Junior Caminero capped it with a three-run homer in the ninth. Kameron Misner, Danny Jansen, and Jake Mangum also drove in runs. Rays hitters tallied 28 hits and 15 walks across the sweep.
Mets starter Griffin Canning (6–3) struggled, giving up six runs and walking five. The loss marked New York’s first sweep of 2025, and their most lopsided defeat of the season.
Tampa Bay Sun Claim Inaugural USL Super League Title in Extra Time Thriller
The Tampa Bay Sun captured the first-ever USL Women’s Super League championship with a dramatic 1–0 win over Fort Lauderdale United Saturday night at Tampa’s packed Riverfront Stadium. Danish international Cecilie Fløe scored the match-winner in the 100th minute—her 12th goal of the season—after a brilliant assist by Sydny Nasello, who sliced through the defense to set up the decisive moment.
The Sun (13–6–10) earned their spot in the final with a semifinal victory over Dallas Trinity, while Fort Lauderdale (11–9–9) had upset top-seeded North Carolina Ascent. The Super League, a newly launched fall-to-spring professional league, complements the NWSL as a top-tier women's soccer platform in the U.S.
With a growing national presence and expanded opportunities, the USL Super League is positioning itself as a serious force in women's soccer.
