Week of Events Celebrating Tampa’s 138th Birthday

Tampa celebrates its 138th birthday this week with a series of free public events across the city, highlighting its rich history and cultural diversity.

The official birthday is July 15, and the city is partnering with museums, libraries, and historical institutions for seven days of programming.

Highlights include:

  • Monday: A tribute to Frances Henriquez, Tampa’s former City Clerk, and a look at the city 100 years ago.

  • Tuesday: Tours of the restored Sanchez y Haya Building and an evening at Tampa’s Black History Museum.

  • Friday: Dedication of Soulwalk historical markers at key cemeteries.

  • Saturday: Brunch with mimosas and a talk by Dr. Sarah McNamara at Centro Asturiano.

Events are part of Archives Awareness Week, started in 1992 to showcase Tampa’s evolving story.

From historic airport artifacts to hidden immigrant stories, this celebration is as diverse as the city itself.

Amazon’s Matt Garman Bets Big on an Agentic
AI Future

AWS CEO Matt Garman is steering Amazon Web Services through its most intense innovation cycle yet, betting on “agentic computing” as the next major shift in cloud technology. Garman argues AI agents — able to act autonomously and process massive data sets — will transform industries faster than previous SaaS waves.

To meet demand, AWS plans to spend over $30 billion on infrastructure in North Carolina and Pennsylvania, with total Amazon capex hitting $71 billion in 2023. Garman emphasizes that this is “demand-driven”, not speculative.

AWS is also leaning into custom silicon, like Graviton and Trainium chips, to cut compute costs up to 40%. As rivals Microsoft and Google push their AI edge, Garman says AWS' breadth, speed, and flexibility will keep it ahead.

Inside AWS, Garman promotes a culture of relentless change. “Every job will evolve with AI,” he says. The finish line? re:Invent 2025, where more agentic breakthroughs are expected.

OneTouch-PAT: New AI Imaging System Detects Breast Cancer in Under a Minute

A new imaging system, OneTouch-PAT, can detect breast cancer in under a minute without painful compression, according to a University at Buffalo study published in IEEE Transactions on Medical Imaging.

The system uses a combination of photoacoustic and ultrasound imaging with AI-powered 3D analysis, producing highly detailed images of subtypes such as Luminal A, Luminal B, and Triple-Negative Breast Cancer.

Unlike mammograms, patients gently press against an imaging window while standing—no radiation or discomfort involved.

Involving 61 breast cancer patients and four healthy individuals, the system identified distinct vascular patterns tied to tumor types, helping overcome limitations of mammography and operator-dependent ultrasound.

Designed for dense breast tissue, OneTouch-PAT can spot blood vessel growth and tumor characteristics more clearly.

More studies are planned before clinical use, but researchers see strong potential to augment current diagnostic methods and improve early detection.

The work was NIH-funded and involved multiple departments from UB and Roswell Park.

Rays Sale to Zalupski Group Nearing Finish Line, Team Expected to Stay in Tampa Bay

Tampa Bay Rays owner Stuart Sternberg is finalizing a $1.7 billion sale of the franchise to a group led by Jacksonville developer Patrick Zalupski, according to The Athletic.

The deal, expected to close by September, still needs Major League Baseball approval, requiring support from 75% of other owners. Zalupski is committed to keeping the team in Tampa Bay, with Tampa preferred over St. Petersburg.

The ownership group includes Ken Babby (minor-league team owner) and Bill Cosgrove (CEO of Union Home Mortgage).

MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred supports a new stadium in Tampa. Local officials, including Hillsborough Commissioner Ken Hagan, are optimistic.

Sternberg’s 2004 investment of $200M could net a massive return, as the franchise was recently valued at $1.25–$1.35B. He may retain a minor ownership stake.

Zalupski, 44, is CEO of Dream Finders Homes and a major political donor and sports sponsor, with ties to the Jacksonville Jaguars.
