Rays Fans Dream of a Big-Spending Owner — At Last

Baseball in Tampa Bay has thrived on patience, frugality, and resilience, but fans may finally see change. The news of a potential Rays sale to Jacksonville developer Patrick Zalupski sparks hopes for an owner with the resources to lift the franchise beyond small-market constraints.

The team has achieved remarkable success under low payrolls, including nine playoff appearances since 2008, yet has never ranked higher than 22nd in league spending. Ownership shortcomings and an aging stadium have held the franchise back, despite devoted fans and talent-rich rosters.

Now, Zalupski’s group could usher in a new era — one that marries on-field excellence with financial muscle and political savvy. But much hinges on whether a new stadium, ideally in Tampa, becomes reality. Without it, even a new owner may struggle to keep the team rooted in the region.

For long-suffering Rays fans, this sale is the long-awaited first step.

Can Private Investors Turn “Suitcase City” Into a Tech Powerhouse?

A group of private investors, led by Cesar Hernandez and Jackie Toledo, aim to transform the USF/Fowler Avenue area — long plagued by poverty, crime, and urban sprawl — into a thriving tech hub.

Backed by $10 million from the Tampa Knowledge Fund (with hopes of raising $50M), their goal is to attract start-ups, revitalize real estate, and expand local job opportunities without displacing longtime residents.

Vu Studios, a cutting-edge production company, is already anchoring this effort inside a reimagined University Mall, now home to USF’s Institute of Applied Engineering and the AMRoC Fab Lab.

Despite past failed attempts, supporters — including former Mayor Bob Buckhorn — say this time feels different.

Still, major hurdles remain: aging infrastructure, fragmented governance, and fears of gentrification without inclusion.

Hernandez insists the strategy is personal and equitable:
“I have a first-hand account of what this community needs.”

Doctors Embrace AI—But Fear Its Use by Patients

A new Elsevier survey of over 2,200 clinicians worldwide reveals growing optimism around AI in healthcare, but also deep concerns—especially when it comes to patients using ChatGPT and similar tools to self-diagnose.

Doctors worry about misinformation, as large language models still "hallucinate" answers 30–50% of the time, potentially leading patients to skip proper care or arrive with inaccurate assumptions.

While AI use among clinicians doubled in the last year—from 26% to 48%—only 16% trust it for clinical decisions.

Most doctors prefer to use AI for admin tasks like drafting letters or checking drug interactions.

Yet access remains limited: only 29% report having proper AI governance at their workplace.

The consensus? AI can streamline workflows and improve care—but only if trained on high-quality data and used under medical supervision.

As one doctor put it:
“AI should support, not replace, clinical judgment.”

Junior Caminero Shines Bright in Thrilling Derby Run

Junior Caminero promised fans a show — and delivered, blasting his way to the 2025 T-Mobile Home Run Derby finals before falling 18–15 to Cal Raleigh, MLB’s current home run leader.

In his Derby debut, the Rays slugger crushed 21 homers in the opening round, including a 475-foot shot, and eight more in just 57 seconds during the semis to top Byron Buxton.

Caminero, 21, was aiming to become the youngest champion in Derby history. Encouraged mid-round by fellow Dominicans Fernando Tatis Jr. and Elly De La Cruz, he powered past 425 feet consistently, averaging 103.7 mph exit velocity.

Despite falling short in the final, Caminero earned wide praise and hinted at a return: “It was a tremendous experience. I wasn’t disappointed at all.”

He joins Longoria, Peña, and Arozarena as the only Rays to compete in the Derby.
